1Write down the educational uses of mass media.
Educational channelsChannels such as Dnyanadarshan, National Geographic and Discovery telecast programmes on science, history, nature and geography.
Lessons at a distanceA teacher can reach students in many places at once through radio, television and the internet.
Information for studyThe internet and newspapers give information needed for projects, and this information helps in building knowledge.
AwarenessProgrammes on health, cleanliness, gender equality and the environment teach people things that are not in the textbook.
News of the worldEvents happening anywhere in the world can be watched live, so we learn about other countries and their people.
Government schemesSchemes for education and scholarships reach students and parents through mass media.
2How were messages communicated before we began to use the telephone?

Before the telephone, a message had to be carried physically from one place to another, so communication was slow and depended on the distance.

By word of mouth — a person travelling that way carried the news and told it to others.
Messengers — runners and riders on horseback were sent with important messages.
Letters and the postal service — a written message was carried by post and took days to arrive.
Pigeons — in the olden days trained pigeons were used to carry short written notes.
Drums, bells and signals — the beating of a drum, the ringing of a bell or a fire lit on a height told people of a gathering or a danger.
The telegram — later, a short message could be sent quickly over wires from one telegraph office to another.

3What difference has the computer made to your life?

The computer has made studying easier for me. When I do not understand a lesson, I can look for pictures and short films about it, and the topic becomes clear. I can prepare my projects on it and print them neatly.

It has also brought people closer. We can see and talk to our relatives who live far away. My father pays bills and fills forms on the computer instead of standing in a queue.

But I have also learnt that it must be used carefully. If I sit at it for too long, my eyes begin to burn and my back aches, and I do not go out to play. So I keep a fixed time for it and spend the rest of my time on games and reading.

Note: this is a sample answer. Write about the way you use a computer at home or at school, and mention both what it helps you do and the care you take while using it.
