Exercises

1Write five sentences on how you have benefited from transport facilities.

(1) I reach my school quickly by bus, and so I am not tired before the day begins.

(2) Fruits and vegetables grown in far-off places reach the market in our town, so we get many kinds of food all through the year.

(3) When someone in the family falls ill, we can take them to the hospital at once by autorickshaw or car.

(4) We are able to visit our relatives who live in another district during the holidays.

(5) Books, medicines and other things that are not made in our area reach our shops because of lorries and trains.

Note: this is a sample answer. Write five sentences about the transport you actually use in your own life.

2List four other facilities that have become available in the local area due to transport facilities.
Markets and shopsGoods brought from other towns and States are sold here, so many things are easily available.
Hospitals and medical helpDoctors, medicines and ambulances can reach the area, and patients can be taken to bigger hospitals.
Schools and collegesStudents and teachers from nearby villages can travel to them every day.
Postal and courier serviceLetters and parcels are carried to and from the area.

Because of transport, work gets done sooner, trade is made easier and the facilities of tourism, health and education have all become speedier.

3Suggest four solutions to reduce the burden on the local transport.
Walk short distances — going on foot to places close by keeps us healthy and needs no vehicle at all.
Use a bicycle — for slightly longer distances a bicycle saves money, causes no pollution and takes up little space on the road.
Share the journey — when several people going the same way travel together in one vehicle, fewer vehicles are needed.
Use private vehicles only when necessary — keeping them for long journeys or emergencies leaves the roads and buses less crowded.
4Find the area in your locality with the least pollution. Why is this the least polluted area?

What to look for: a place with few vehicles, plenty of trees, no factory close by and little noise will usually be the cleanest part of any locality.

5Write the full forms of CNG and LPG.
Short formFull form
CNGCompressed Natural Gas
LPGLiquefied Petroleum Gas

Both are used as fuels in vehicles in place of petrol and diesel, because they cause much less pollution.

6Look at the picture of the busy road and answer the following.
(a) In the above picture, which vehicle is causing pollution?

The bus is causing the pollution. A thick cloud of black smoke is coming out of it and spreading over the road, troubling the people riding behind it.

(b) What remedy will you suggest to reduce the pollution caused by this vehicle?
Repair and service the bus in time — an engine that is not maintained burns its fuel badly and gives out black smoke.
Change the fuel — running the bus on CNG or LPG instead of diesel causes far less pollution.
Check the smoke regularly — every vehicle should be tested to see that the smoke it releases is within the permitted limit.

A bus is still better than many private vehicles, because it carries a large number of people at one time. If it is kept in good condition, it causes much less pollution per person than everyone travelling separately.
